1) Battle for Rome - "While action see-saws at the Italian Front, hordes of Germans are shown marching in one direction, to our rear. They are prisoners of the Yanks and of the French. Nor is their stubbornness diminished by the sight of numerous German dead." 2) Nazis Wreck Warehouse - "Nazi bombers set off a fire which consumes one of our warehouses in Italy. In a tight squeeze, a truck full of G.I. shoes are saved." 3) Bomb Rome Rail Yards - "Flying Fortresses fly over Rome, then blast selected outlying districts, in another of their preceision raids." 4) Rooms of Tomorrow - "Toledo, Ohio: The House of Tomorrow is filled with mirrors which lend dimensional depth to the interior, and set off to particular advantage any beauty who reclines in their range." 5) Boys' Pennies Buy Canteen - "The Boy's Clubs of America earned $2,500 at odd jobs here and there. The American dead are interred at a military cemetery. America's new hero, Admiral Chester W. Nimitz, Commander-in-Chief of the Pacific Fleet, rides into view in a jeep. Accompanying him are Admirals Hoover and Turner, and Generals Holland Smith and Harry Schmidt. Shortly after the Stars and Stripes are placed in postiion over the Atoll, the electrifying news from Truk comes in, and a fuller significance is given to this marvelous victory in the Marshalls."

Jap Planes Blasted By Navy Guns 1944/01/03 (1944)
[this newsreel is silent] (1) "Yank Marksmen Bag Jap Planes (A flaming spectacle which elicits gasps from seasoned film goers) - As an American task force steams along to prosecute a raid on the marshall Islands, Jap torpedo planes soar into view to destroy a Yank aircraft carrier. From her expansive flight deck we see some of the most spectacular action scenes of this war. Sailors fall prone to permit sprays of bullets to belch upwards at the attacking Japs. One of the celestial planes streaks in alongside out ship and he is hit with a torrent of lead. He sinks into the ocean and his foul ship explodes. Another Jap nips into view, on his close run for the kill. He gets his baptism of lead, and suddenly, one of his wings is shot right off, and he falls in flames, headed straight into Davey Jones's locker." 2) Ships of Concrete - "Georgia: 'Concrete No. 8,' an 11,000 ton tanker built of concrete, hits the ways, with the reputation of being 'unsinkable' and capable of lasting forever." 3) Italian Front.

JFK "MAN and PRESIDENT" part 2 of 2
This is a restored 8mm black & white film documenting the life of President John F. Kennedy. This was originally produced by Hearst Movietone shortly after the JFK assassination, and distributed by Movie Newsreels on silent 8mm reels for people to purchase for their personal home projection units. I came across this old reel and restored it as much as possible through a digital conversion process. Since this came from a silent 8mm film reel, I added my own music score to the film. The full duration of the film is slightly longer than 13 minutes. Due to the 10 minute time restrictions of YouTube, I have broken the file into 2 segments. This second segment documents moments and memories of the Kennedy First Family followed by news footage of public reactions to the Dallas assassination, the parking garage murder of Lee Harvey Oswald, The Kennedy funeral at St. Matthew's Church and closing with public graveside services. The digital conversion was performed using a Moviestuff WorkPrinter XP and captured through a Canon XL2. Image correction was done with Final Cut Pro and the music score was a constructed using Sonicfire Pro.

Big City Blues - Arnold Johnson's Orch., 1929
Arnold JOHNSON was born in 1893 in Chicago. At age of 14 he started working as a pianist in a Chicago Chinese restaurant. He went on to study music at the Chicago Music College and the American Conservatory of Music, and got his first band job with famed saxophonist Rudy Wiedoeft. After migrating to New York City in 1919, Arnold organized and led the 'Frisco Jass Band'. In 1922, Johnson played at the Pelham Heath Inn in New York, and in the mid 1920s he briefly left the music business and sold real estate in Florida. He returned to music in the late 1920's and led what was considered to be his best band. The band appeared in two Broadway Musicals: „George White Scandals" of 1928, and „Greenwich Village Follies" of 1928. In 1929 the band was also featured in another Broadway musical, "Earl Carroll's Sketch Book." Between shows, he played night clubs and theater dates alternating between Chicago and New York. The Star-Spangled Banner (1942)
Since "The Star-Spangled Banner" officially became the U.S. National Anthem in 1931, it became a custom for theaters to show films like this one at the top of their programs, for the same reason it's sung at sporting events: to honor America. Patrons were encouraged to stand and sing. This was especially important to theater-goers during the Second World War, when sincere patriotism was at an all-time high. This was the one shown in Fox-owned theatres beginning in 1942. It featured Fred Waring and His Pennsylvanians, and raised more than a few eyebrows during the "rocket's red glare" scene, when the flag appeared to be on fire. (Note the push to buy War Bonds at the end.)

Reese Schonfeld - Air date: 06-16-03
Reese Schonfeld has been in the broadcast and cable news business for more than thirty years, helping to change the direction of news and information programming in both media. He began his career with United Press Movietone News in 1956, advancing to managing editor before becoming Vice President of United Press International Television News. In 1975, Schonfeld founded the Independent Television News Association, the first satellite-delivered television news service. In 1979 he helped found the Cable News Network and served as its first President and Chief Executive. At CNN he originated and developed the 24 hour news concept. Under his leadership, CNN grew from a universe of 1.5 million homes to more than 15 million homes. After leaving CNN, Schonfeld joined Cablevision Systems in New York where he developed and oversaw "News Twelve" on Long Island, the first 24-hour local all news service. Schonfeld also produced "People Magazine on TV" for CBS and helped to develop "Newschannel 8" for Allbritton Communications Company. Schonfeld then worked with Time Warner in planning the International Business Channel and in 1993 had designed and implemented the Medical News Network, an interactive TV News Service for Whittle Communications. He also served on the board of Robert Halmi International prior to its sale to Hallmark In 1992, Schonfeld began developing the TV FOOD NETWORK with The Providence Journal Company. The Network launched on November 23, 1993 with Schonfeld as President. In 1995 Schonfeld organized the internet team that launched FoodTV.com. and was named Vice Chairman of the network. In 1996 the FoodNetwork was sold to Belo Broadcasting and subsequently resold to the E.W. Scripps Company. In 1999 Schonfeld sold his interest in the FoodNetwork to Scripps but continues to consult to both the FoodNetwork and Belo Broadcasting. For the past several years, Schonfeld has been actively involved in the internet. In 1996 he advised the founders of Auto-by-Tel; he now continues to develop projects for cable and television, while serving on the board of Minutemeals.com Inc., which publishes MyFoodDirectory.com. Schonfeld has recently completed his memoirs, "Me and Ted Against the World," detailing the creation and course of CNN. Me and Ted was published by HarperCollins in February 2001. Schonfeld is a graduate of Dartmouth College and holds an M.A. and a law degree from Columbia University.
